About the Project So Far . . .
I have to admit, I very much like the aesthetic of futuristic architecture covered in lush vegetation. What I'm really curious about, however, is how a solarpunk type community might function - its culture, its ecology, its traditions. What do its people think is important? What forces have shaped them? What do they do for fun? What do they eat for breakfast? I think of this project as a sort of quirky reverse archeological dig into an earth centered society multiple centuries down the road. Is it even plausible that humanity makes it through the bottleneck of post collapse? I honestly don't know. This project imagines that people have survived to re-build in a new way.
Note: As a world-building exercise, these pages are meant to be constantly evolving. Things may be changed around, this background page may be added to, and concept art either re-worked or re-named.
About the City
The city of New Serenia exists in a world that has painstakingly re-built itself from the ground up. It has been approximately 200 years since onset of The Great Decline, and 180 years since the beginning of the Great Collapse - an era of famines, plagues, and societal breakdown. The U.S. has fractured into a series of city-states and federations.
New Serenia's old quarter (also known as The Inner Core) is located behind the city's shield wall, the relic of a turbulent 50 year period in North American history. The Inner Core is a patchwork architecture of dwellings, shops, and alleyways. This part of the city grew organically, MacGyvering itself into existence, and following the "whatever works" ethos. The new quarter, or "Outland", is located outside the shield wall. Built during the later half of The Recovery, it was more carefully planned and considered, and is home to the city's tech and science collectives.
